Different methods for artificial in vivo inoculation of young bromeliads with Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. aechmea in function of resistance breeding

The effects of 16 different inoculation methods with Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. aechmea on young Aechmea fasciata plants were studied. This aimed at a standardized inoculation method, profitable for bromeliad breeders for screening resistance or tolerance of existing and new bromeliad cultivars. The use of inocula based on microconidia suspensions on plants with a slightly damaged root system, gave the best results in our experiments. Plants inoculated with mycelium plugs reacted slower and less intensively. The number of microconidia in the inoculum was not relevant since severe effects are obtained with inocula containing 20,000,000 to 250,000 microconidia. The effect of substrates inoculated with infected plant material, are inferior to those obtained with suspensions of microconidia. Finally two inoculation methods were retained as a classic routine method for breeders to test the sensitivity of their plants to F. oxysporum f. sp.aechmea.
