[Influence of different site characteristics on the estimation of peakflows in small catchment areas]

From a selection of infiltration and field sprinkler experiments described in literature we derive some governing site characteristics for the formation of peakflows. An investigation of vegetation, land use management, and soil parameters permits the determination of adapted runoff coefficients which allows an estimation of peakflows. In this paper a method to estimate these runoff coefficients is proposed. Infiltration conditions and water uptake capacity are investigated. Waterlogging and compaction are the primary criteria for the infiltration conditions. These two aspects can be assessed by indicator plants and the knowledge of land use management. Pasturing and riding heavy machinery as well as using the land as ski run have substantial compacting effects. The water uptake capacity is judged by criteria of soil characteristics, such as the structure of the soil layers, skeleton-content, and soil depth. The procedure is tested in five small catchment areas, where series of data gathered over many years exist
