Control of codling moth Cydia pomonella L. by an attract and kill technique

The attract and kill technique developed by Ciba (SIRENE CM) consists of a viscous formulation containing 0.16 % codlemone to attract the males and 6.0 % permethrine to kill them. Males contacting a drop die within a few hours. Thus, reproduction is reduced. The formulation is applied by hand with a specially developed application system twice per season. Two trials were conducted in 1995 in isolated orchards to control codling moth by two applications of 1200 and 2700 drops per hectare. An average drop was 100 microlitres. The larval attack of codling moth on fruit was below a threshold of one percent during the whole season and also at harvest. The hibernating population remained at a low level. Seven trials (ca. 11 ha) were carried out in 1996 in isolated orchards to control codling moth by two applications per season of 1000 to 10000 drops per hectare. An average drop was 50 microlitres. A single small plot (0.35 ha) with much too high an initial population (more than 20 % fruit damage at 1995 harvest) had to be sprayed curatively. In the other trials fruit damage at harvest was low and hibernating population caught in corrugated bands was less than one larve per tree
