Through interspecific hybridization between cultivated sunflower and wild Helianthus species, forms with the potential of use for new characteristics in sunflower were produced. Transfer of resistance to pests, early maturity and fertility-restorer genes (Rf-genes) was apparent in the F1, and of other traits in the next generations. Application of single and double backcross, sib-pollination and self-pollination made possible not only to overcome the barrier of sterility of the interspecific hybrids, but to create forms with interesting new characteristics. New material with resistance to Plasmopara helianthi, Phomopsis helianthi, Phoma helianthi, Erysiphe cichoracearum and Orobanche cumana, with high seed oil content, early maturity and large seed size was produced. Twelve new CMS-sources were obtained from five annual and one perennial species
