The assessment of cultivation method on the spatial distribution of conducting roots was investigated in group- and row-cultivated middle-aged Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) stands. Response to cultivation method in the above-ground parts of stand was estimated comparing the following stand characteristics: mean height, mean diameter at breast height, mean stem overbark volume; basal area, standing volume and number of stems per ha. Due to higher root density in the group culture, root graftings were found more frequently (3 times) than in the row culture. Root graftings between different trees, enhancing spreading of root and stem rot occurred in the group culture 62.5 per cent and in the row culture 33.3 per cent of trees
