Soil organic matter (humus) is considered to be one of the most valuable resources in agriculture. On the humus status depend its productivity, management technology and environmentally sound utilization. The main task of this research is the assessment of soil humus status in the conditions of South-Estonia. This paper forms a part of a long-term study which aims to estimate the humus status of soils in Estonia. To characterize the influence of human activities, arable soils are compared to respective grassland and forest soil. This paper attempts to answer the following questions: 1) which are the granulometrical composition and agrochemical properties of studied soils; 2) which is the variability of humus content and humus stock in agroecosystems; 3) how does humus distribute in the soil profile and in the humus cover; 4) which are the properties of studied soils in different ecosystems
