Perspective of triploids in plant breeding

The occurrence of triploids among cultivated plants is shortly reviewed. Attention is given to the intentional use of triploids in plant breeding. Triploids have great perspectives in the breeding of vegetatively propagated plants and in cases where the aim of cultivation is not the seed production. Fruiting and seed formation of triploids depend on parthenocarpy and potential for apomictic multiplication. Structural heterozygosity seems to be the main cause of heterosis in triploids
