Factors affecting the adoption of maize production technologies in Bako area, Ethiopia

The impacts of farm-family household characteristics (age and formal education), farmer's resource endowments (labor, farm size and oxen), and institutional support systems (provision of credit and extension services) on the adoption of maize production technologies in the Bako area of Ethiopia were analyzed using the logit regression mode. Three technologies, i.e., variety, fertilizer and row planting were considered. The results indicated that the adoption of improved maize variety is significantly influenced by extension service, and the use of fertilizers is significantly related to provision of credit and education. Row planting is positively related to farmers' formal education and oxen ownership. The analysis underscored the importance of policy instruments such as extension services, credit provision, formal education and ownership of oxen to increase adoption of appropriate technologies for the local farming systems.
