The storage of silkworm cocoons during diapause and the following period until the date of hatching, considerably influences hatching percentage, uniformity, worm viability, and, in a word, the success of silkworm breeding. We examined the values of temperature applied during the storage of silkworm eggs. At the end of diapause, we kept the eggs for 6 days at 15 degrees C. This is termed as heat-shock. It is a necessary step in that it allows embryos to determine the date of hatching. During this period, we kept the eggs under permanent embryologic examination. On the basis of completed examinations, the daily division of the temperature values we applied is as follows: 5 degrees C for 120 days; 15 degrees C for 6 days; 2 degrees C for 30 days. This daily distribution of temperature values corresponds to the hatching date under our climactic conditions. This occurs at the end of April when the first mulberry tree leaves appear
