[Plant population and mulching application: effect on ginger growth]

Ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.) is one of the most prospective spices in Lampung Province. Population of the crop and mulching application play an important role in increasing the yield. Crop population may be increased up to optimum yield by minimizing the crop spacing. Many kinds of mulches were reported to be useful. Rice straw could be the most available mulch in paddy land vicinity. An experiment was conducted to know the effect of dense population, quantity of mulch and their interaction on the ginger growth at Balik Bukit Subdistrict, West Lampung. The factorial randomized complete block design with 3 replications was used. The first factor was mulching and without mulching. The second factor was the population of 111, 266, and 540 per 20 square m. The results showed that mulching of rice straw increased tillering but not the crop height and leaf number. The population gave no significant effect on the growth. The increase of population up to 540/20 square m did not decrease the ginger growth, so it is not reasonable to expect the increase of the yield due to the increase in the population
