[Quality of silage and productivity of cows]

The value of grass forage as the basic feed for dairy cattle in Latvia in all the seasons is explained. The grass conservation technologies with and without the use of chemical conserving agents are analysed. The nutritional and economic value of silage made by the two different technologies is compared. The influence of the Finnish conservation agent AIV on the quality of silage and the productivity of cows is discussed. The economic efficiency of its use is determined. Three tables are given showing 1)the quality of silage made by means of different technologies; 2)influence of silage quality on feed consumption; 3)average productivity of a cow per day feeding silage of different quality.
