[The potato wholesale market at the central de abasto of Mexico City]

In Mexico, potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) ranks first in harvested area and second in production value among vegetable crops; Mexico City the main market is therefore, this paper focuses on the performance of this vegetable in the wholesale market Central de Abasto, at Mexico City (CEDA-D.F.), and on the estimation of its marketing margins at different levels. In addition, the principal marketing chains that carry potato from the farm to the consumer are identified. The marketing investigation was based on data obtained from sample surveys applied to main potato wholesalers at CEDA-D.F., in 1991. In order to cross information, other data were obtained from government institutions related to these activities. The production areas were located by states, and also by varieties of potato produced in each state. The annual crop production showed seasonal patterns that effect potato prices. Some potato producers are owners of warehouses at CEDA-D.F.; therefore, they can retain a major share of wholesale market, they can reduce their marketing costs, and they can influence both farm and retail prices through wholesale price, while looking for greater benefits.

Испанский язык; кастильский. La papa (Solanum tuberosum L.) es la hortaliza que ocupa el primer lugar en superficie cosechada y el segundo en el valor de la produccion en el pais. La Ciudad de Mexico es el principal mercado; por tanto, se analizo el desempeno del mercado mayorista de este tuberculo en la Central de Abasto en Mexico, D.F. (CEDA-D.F.), y se calcularon sus margenes de comercializacion a diferentes niveles. Tambien se identificaron los principales canales de comercializacion desde la unidad de produccion rural hasta el consumidor. La investigacion se baso en encuestas a una muestra de los principales mayoristas de papa de CEDA-D.F., en 1991. Con el fin de cruzar la informacion, se obtuvieron daatos de instituciones gubernamentales relacionadas con estas actividades, considerandon que estas intervienen en el proceso de comercializacion por las funciones que realizan. Las areas productoras se ubicaron por entidad federativa y por la variedad de papa producida en cada uno de ellas. La produccion anual mostro patrones estacionales que afectan los precios de este producto. Algunos productores de papa tambien son propietarios de bodegas en CEDA-D.F. lo que les permite detentar una mayor proporcion del mercado mayorista, poder reducir sus costos de comercializacion e influir en los precios al consumidor y al consumidor a traves del precio al mayoreo, buscando obtener mayores beneficios.
