The effects of water deficit on grain yield and hydric variables of cowpeas (Vigna anguiculata (L.) Walp) were evaluated in semiarid zone, located at La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Water deficit treatments for 80, 60, 40 and 20 % of soil water depletion, were applied; in situ measurements of water content were determined by means of calibrated gypsum blocks. Results suggest that experimental plants can tolerate up to 40 % of available water depletion without diminishing grain yield. Adjusted yields were 1.75, 2.1, 2.45 and 2.1 t/ha, for 80, 60, 40 and 20 % of soil water depletion, respectively. There were small significant differences for hydric variables; analysis of results suggests that V. unguiculata apears to be drought tolerant.
