Utilization of wild sunflower compost as fertilizer in carrots and tomatoes in Bila, Bauko, Mountain Province [Philippines]

The study was conducted to utilize wild sunflower and determine the effectiveness of wild sunflower as fertilizer in carrots and tomato. It was conducted with a group of 10 farmers in a small community where access is difficult. Laboratory analysis revealed that wild sunflower contains an average amount of the following nutrients: nitrogen, 3.8 percent; phosphorus, 1.5 percent; potassium, 5.22 percent; zinc, 126.55 ppm; manganese, 255.67 ppm; iron, 3,961.5 ppm, and trace amount of copper. The treatments used were based on the N-P-K requirement of the crop. However, the N-P-K content of wild sunflower is not balanced, hence, excess in some of the elements was noted. Results in carrots revealed no significant difference among treatments in terms of number of marketable roots, weight of marketable roots, number of non-marketable roots, weight of marketable roots and total yield.
