Geographic information system-based approach and water balance simulation modeling in the extrapolation of rice environment

The environment of the municipality of Batac, Ilocos Norte [Philippines] was studied to characterize, describe and extrapolate rice environments using Computer Aided Mapping Program (CAMP) and SAWAH, a water balance simulation sub-model of the Modules of an Annual Crop Simulators (MACROS). The thematic coverages of existing land use, slope, agroclimatic and degree of erosion were rasterized and overlaid using CAMP. Results showed that a strategic rice-on-site CSRO area of 5,132 ha or 33 percent total area, translated into a computer raster map, were classified as suitable for rice production. Results from a rainfed rice-growing watershed study showed that the variation of paddy hydrology affected the growth and development of rainfed rice and nitrogen usage. Stages of regression models showed that rice yields were significantly affected by landscape location and nitrogen use. The rainfed lowland rice showed that rice yields were significantly affected by landscape location and nitrogen use. The rainfed lowland rice-growing watershed studied, although no access to irrigation systems, performed some approved soil and water management practices to provide rain-water conservation facilities and small structures for sustainability. Risk assessment of rainfed rice-growing watershed made possible by the combined application of GIS and simulation models could be useful to farmers, researchers and extension workers for land use planning
