Economics of large scale commercial sweetpotato production in Malaysia

A survey on large scale producers was conducted in May 1995 to evaluate the economic viability of large scale sweetpotato production in Malaysia. The survey revealed the wide range of ex-farm price of RM80-RM1000 per ton and the marginal difference in the production cost between small- and large-scale producers. Considering the bigger capital outlay in large scale production, the return on investment may not be economically viable. Therefore, there is a need to reduce the production cost. This can be done by improving on the cultural management practices such as high density planting and fertilizer application, use of high yielding varieties and mechanization of certain operations, especially harvesting
