Ten half-diallel crosses along with the five parental lines were evaluated to estimate the magnitude of combining ability effects and heterosis in bottlegourd (Lagenaria siceraria (Mol.) Standl.). The preliminary analysis of data with respect to all characters studied showed significant to highly significant differences except for number of pickings. Highly significant general combining ability (g.c.a.) effects were noted for all traits except for number of pickings while significant specific combining ability (s.c.a) effects were detected for days to first harvest fruit weight, length and diameter. Of the parental lines, the inbred line 10-28-5 + 1-1-1-0 was best general combiner for yield, number of fruits per plant and fruit length. Based on heterotic and s.c.a. effects, the F1-hybrid 10-40 + 1-0 x 10-28-5 + 1-1-1-0 was identified as the prospective combination for the exploitation of hybrid vigor in bottlegourd especially for yield and fruit traits. Furthermore, the presence of marked non-additive gene effects for yield, in addition to additive gene effects for yield related traits indicated the need for exploiting both the fixable and non-fixable components of genetic variance for increasing the productivity in bottlegourd
