Estimation of optimum leaf area index and its relation to net assimilation rate, crop growth rate and yield of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.)

Leaf area has been adopted as a measure of the size of the photosynthetic system. High correlation between leaf area and growth rate in various crops including cotton has been reported. However, more crop oriented concept of assessing quantitative performance of the whole plant community is leaf area index and further, an optimum leaf area index are evident in various crops. Therefore, it is necessary to estimate and established the optimum leaf area index (LAI) in cotton (G. hirsutum L.) and determine the relationship of LAI to some growth parameters like net assimilation rate (NAR) and crop growth rate (CGR) and to the seedcotton yield. Plant spacing and nitrogen fertilizer cause significant differences in plant architecture and structure, hence, they were used as variables in establishing variations in leaf area index to meet the requirements of the study. Plant spacing and total leaf area were used to estimate LAI, while total leaf area and total dry matter yield per plant (TDMY) were used to estimate NAR and CGR. NAR and LAI were used to estimate optimum LAI. Seedcotton yield was another criterion for optimum LAI estimation. Plant spacing and fertilizer treatments significantly altered the over-all stature of the cotton plant.
