Are polyamines involved in the KNO3-induced mango flowering?

The hypothesis that KNO3-induced flowering in mango is mediated by polyamines was investigated. Baseline data were gathered on leaf polyamine content in developing mango shoots from 5 to 10 months after flushing. HPLC analysis revealed the presence of putrescine and spermidine in the leaf tissues sampled. Putrescine and spermidine were sprayed on shoots at 5 and 50 micro M, with 2 percent KNO3 as positive, and water as negative control. In trees that responded to KNO3, no flowering was observed in response to polyamine application and in water control. Another approach taken to test the hypothesis that polyamines mediate the KNO3 effect was to spray 20 micro M cyclohexylamine (CHA), an inhibitor of spermidine synthase, together with the 2 percent KNO3 spray
