Performance of 49 peanut entries under reduced and full-sunlight conditions

Forty-nine peanut entries were evaluated in a preliminary yield trial under shaded and open condition at the Institute of Plant Breeding, UPLB during the 1993-94 dry season. A split-plot design was used with sunlight level as mainplot and variety as sub-plot. Sunlight was reduced by 60 percent by installing temporary shade structure using ipil-ipil posts and fish net, two weeks after germination. Pod and bean yields per hectare, number of pod per plant and dry matter yield per hectare decreased while 100-seed weight, plant height and shelling percentage increased under shaded condition. Absolute bean yield ranged from 400 to 1469 and 229 to 949 kg per hectare under open and shaded conditions, respectively. Corresponding reduction in yield ranged from 0.2 to 60.5 percent. Four entries namely: IPB Pn 87-66BC-75, IPB Pn 88-30-12, EG Pn 3 and EG PN 7 were among the top ten entries based on absolute yield and percent yield reduction. No significant interaction between variety and sunlight level was observed in all the parameters studied
