Properties of six erect bamboo species grown in the Philippines

The physical (viz., moisture content, specific gravity, tangential and radial shrinkage) and mechanical (viz. maximum crushing strength, fiber stress at proportion limit, modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity) properties of kauayan-tinik (Bambusa blumeana Schult), kauayan-kiling (Bambusa vulgaris) Schurd ex Wendel), bayog (Dendrocalamus merrillianus Elm.), giant bamboo (Dendrocalamus asper Schultes f.), bolo [Gigantochloa levis (Blanco) Merr] and buho [Schizostachyum lumampao (Blanco) Merr.] were determined. Additional information such as chemical composition, fibrovascular bundle frequency, dimensions of vessel elements and fibers, and external morphological features of the six species were likewise included. Giant bamboo was the tallest, with the biggest internode diameter, the most number of internodes per culm next to kauayan-kiling, and the longest fibers. Buho was the shortest, with the smallest internode diameter and the least number of internodes per culm. Nevertheless, it yielded the longest internode and highest silica content. The different physical properties significantly differed among species. Likewise, height level showed significant variation in specific gravity and tangential shrinkage. Except for modulus of elasticity (MOE), the mechanical properties did not vary significantly among the six species.
