Effect of cutting at different plant growth stages and heights above ground levels on green fodder and dry matter yields of Sadabahar

In yield trials on Sadabahar (Sorghum 3042-A x Sudan Grass Sweet-II) conducted during 1986-88 crop harvested at complete and 50 percent heading stages gave significantly higher green fodder yield than the crop harvested before heading. This was attributed to greater plant height, more leaf area and number of leaves per tiller. Green fodder yield by cutting at four different heights (2.5, 5.0, 7.5 and 10.0 cm) above ground level were also estimated. Crop cutting at 7.5 cm height gave significantly higher yield with more number of tillers per plant. Similar trend in dry matter yield was observed. It was concluded that cutting of Sadabahar at 7.5 cm height and 50 percent heading was economical. It also provided succulent and superior quality fodder without affecting yield.
