Agronomic evaluation of seed callus derived regenerants of rice (Oryza sativa L.)

The study dealt on the agronomic evaluation of seed callus culture derived R2 lines of pureline variety Momay. There were 34R2 lines representing 8 regenerants with 1 to 7 tillers/regenerants. Significant differences between the R2 lines and the check were found in 4 out of 10 characters while significant differences among R2 lines were found in all except 2 characters, indicating that callus culture technique maybe mutagenic. R2 lines variability was examined in terms of 2 sources of variation - among regenerants and tillers within regenerants. The estimate of variation among regenerants was significant for 3 traits. While variation among tillers within a regenerants was significant for 6. The variation associated with tillers within regenerants was greater than that associated with regenerants. This would suggest that a regenerant was derived from several cells with different mutations and that different mutant cells gave rise to different tillers. All R2 lines were significantly shorter in height and panicle length and flowered earlier than the check, indicating that mutations occurred at extremely high frequencies and could be directional. There were three R2 lines with significantly higher yield than the check. Other lines had reduced panicle sterility. Present results indicate that induced somaclonal variation using seed culture could be useful in varietal improvement
