Oryza glumaepatula: a new source of cytoplasmic-genetic male sterility in rice

To reduce the risk of genetic vulnerability of hybrid rice to diseases and insects, diversification of sources of cytoplasmic male sterility is essential. Crosses of 49 accessions of A genome wild species were made with Oryza sativa cv. IR64. Pollen and seed sterility were analyzed in F1 and backcross generations. Male sterile plants were subsequently backcrossed with the recurrent parent IR64. From the backcross progenies, one of the lines having cytoplasm of O. glumaepatula (Acc 100969) and the nuclear genome of IR64 was seleced. This line is in the BC9 generation and is stable for complete male sterility. The newly developed CMS line had been designated as IR69700 A. It resembles in morphological characteristics to the recurrent parent and is free from weedy characteristics of wild species. Genetic test show that the cytoplasm of IR69700 A is different from that of wild abortive (WA) male sterility source, the most commonly used source in commercial hybrids of indica rice
