Adaptation of sustainable agricultural technologies in rainfed lowland rice farms in Bulacan [Philippines]

A cropping pattern (CP) of wet seeded rice (WSR)-sweet potato, mungbean was evaluated in 10 farmers' fields in San Roque, San Rafael, Bulacan [Philippines] from June 1991 to March 1994. Superimposed fertilizer trial using various ratios of bio-organic and inorganic fertilizer was included in the design. Variety trials of both lowland rice and sweet potato were likewise included. Farmers' training on Rice-Based Farming Systems and field days were conducted as a result of the research activities. Results showed that WSR-sweet potato is a promising CP in the area. The application of 60-60-20 kg NPK/ha using bio-organic fertilizer + ammonium phosphate + urea produced better yield and gave highest net benefit per hectare. BPIRi-10, PSBRC6, PSBRC8, and PSBRC14 rice varieties and UPLSP2 and UPLSP5 sweet potato varieties were found most adaptable in the area
