Harnessing local agencies to expand sweetpotato-based homegardens in northern Philippines: quantitative and qualitative impact

This paper documents the experiences of the Philippine Root Crops Research and Training Center and Benguet State University in promoting sweetpotato-based homegardens in urban communities. The project started as an interdisciplinary action research involving a small group household and two grade schools, then expanded into an interagency activity with the government's health and education departments. In the past two years of implementation (1992-1994), showed that the project achieved field impact. The periodic assessment results through: a.) increase in the number of households and schools which became interested in sweetpotato based gardening, b.) increase in area planted to sweetpotato, c.) increase in the diversity of crops grown, d.) increase in household consumption of sweetpotato, e.) increased importance of backyard gardens as a major source of sweetpotato food, and f.) the additional knowledge gained on nutritional contribution and uses of sweetpotato
