Pesticidal efficacy of the formulated physic nut, Jatropha curcas L. oil on pests of selected field crops

The crude Jatropha curcas seed oil formulated as an emulsifiable concentrate had contact toxicity to stored grain insects (Sitophilus zeamays and Callosubruchus chinensis) and deterred their oviposition on sprayed corn and mungbean seeds, respectively, molluscicidal effect to Pomacea sp., and chronic toxicity to Musca domestica. With a prophylactic pyrethroid spraying at 84 and 97 days after planting (DAP), cotton sprayed with the product at 800 and 1250 ml crude oil/ha had comparable number of bolls with those sprayed with either deltamethrin (12.5 g a.i./ha), or profenofos (400 g a.i./ha) and check treatment. The seedcotton yield was highest on profenofos-treated cotton, followed by that sprayed with deltamethrin, with the latter comparable to that sprayed with the product at 800 ml crude oil/ha or check treatment. The population of natural enemies of Jatropha-treated and check cotton was high but was negligible on cotton sprayed with either deltamethrin or profenofos. The product effectively controlled a variety of pests and was safe to natural enemies
