Determinations of selenium were carried out with the fluorometric method of Watkinson with the use of the 2.3 diaminonaphtalene. The mean content of total selenium in soils was generally low; in black earth - 0.140 mg/kg, in luvisols - 0.085 and in typical brown soils - 0.080 mg/kg and it was highly correlated with organic matter and loamy and clay fractions. The total selenium content in soils was correlated with that in roots of Taraxacum officinale and in leaves and stems of Medicago sativa. The content of selenium in Medicago sativa approached the mean level of 0.069 mg/kg
