Effect of root pruning on growth, fruiting and apple quality of Empire and Spartan apple trees

Twelve year old trees grafted on M26 rootstock were subjected to root pruning from one or both sides of tree row at the distance 0.75 or 1.35 m. Pruning was performed to the depth of 30 cm with a tractor driving knife. It was done either only once, in alternate years or annually in 1992/93/94, mainly in spring time but also in July and October. Spring time pruning restricted shoot and trunk growth, especially when it was close to the tree trunk, on both sides of the tree row or repeated each year. Summer pruning dramatically restricted shoot growth and decreased yield. Autumn pruning had a similar effect to spring pruning. Root-pruned trees showed a tendency to produce smaller fruit than the controls but resulted in better colour, greater firmness and TSS content
