This paper presents the effects of the oil industry - namely the exploitation, processing and transport branches - on the environment, effects that are more or less noxious. Because of the high content of organic carbon (98 per cent hydrocarbon), oil pollution increases the C:N (carbon-nitrogen) ratio in soil, negatively influencing the microbiological activity and plants nitrogen nutrition. The pollution phenomenon materialises as deep soil penetration from 0-30 cm to 80-100 cm, which causes soil degradation, even though some amelioration possibilities still exist.
