Pollution effects produced by non-ferrous metallurgy on soil and vegetation and recommendation for affected areas reconstruction

Taking into account research done in over 200 forest and agricultural ecosystems, we present major heavy metals and sulphur dioxide pollution effects (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd) on soil and vegetation around some smelter and chemical factories (Copsa Mica, Baia Mare, Zlatna). The following processes are revealed: acidification and debazification of soils, microbiological disturbance activity, decrease of macronutrients, decrease of soil fertility, accumulation of pollutants in the aerial plant parts, disturbance of ecological equilibria etc. As agro-forest melioration the following are recommended: reduction of atmospheric pollution, land use restructuration, amendament application, reforestation with pollution resistant species etc.
