To check up the opportunity of gilts mating at the first standing estrus, in the condition of a normal body development a trial was carried out at Romsuintest Peris S.A. on a total number of 150 gilts belonging to LW, L and LS-345 Peris breeds, allocated at random to two groups (matings at first and second observed estrus). The results have shown that: 1. the reproduction condition of gilts at mating was characterized by a body weight of 107-110 Kg and a backfat thickness of 20.2-20.7 mm. 2. - the observed estrus number at which the gilts were mated had a minor influence on their reproductive performance. - the fertility prolificacy was very close, 70-73 per cent and respectively 9.1-9.3. 3. the realized voluntary feed intake of lactating primiparous of 4.4 Kg compound feed was situated at the lowest level recommended by literature. 4. the results outlined the possibility to increase numerical productivity of sows by mating gilts at 105-110 Kg body weight and a backfat of 20 mm independent of estrus number.
