The effect of undersowing of four lucerne cultivars (Palava, Nitranka, Rod-D and Regia) in field trials in three maize hybrids (CE-185, TO-MV-335 and TO-MV-460) was studied. In sowing years, yields (maize+undersown lucerne and lucerne stubble cuts) were most affected by weather conditions. The stands with maize produced 1.84-times more than stands sown without a cover crop. However, in one of three years stands with maize produced less. The variants with TO-MV-335 and TO-MV-460 gave higher yields than ones with hybrid CE-185, lucerne cultivars there having no influence. In the second year of vegetation the undersowings (besides the cultivar Nitranka) were levelled with stands without a cover crop already in the first cut. The stands with undersowing were denser with higher dry matter content and fewer leaves. In the second year average, the yield was affected by weather conditions and also by interaction with the maize cultivar. In the third year of vegetation, only the above-mentioned interaction influenced the yield. In the second year of vegetation, the yields from undersowings were levelled to stands without cover crop in two of three trials. In the third year the yields were higher in two trials and equal in one experimental trial.
