The contamination of agricultural soils (129 sampled places) by mercury and mercury content in some vegetables were investigated in the south Slovakia region, the most important agricultural part of the country. A slightly higher contamination was observed in the southern and western part of Zitny ostrov and near the industrial centres. The average natural content of mercury (up to 0.25 mg.kg** (-1)) was exceeded only in two samples. The reference value settled on for the standard soil (0.3 mg.kg** (-1)) and the indication value for mercury contamination of the soils (2.0 mg.kg** (-1)) was not exceeded in any investigated sample. The hygienic limit for mercury (0.02 mg.kg** (-1)) was not exceeded in any of 12 sorts of analyzed vegetables.
