The mites extracted from 16 swallow nests collected from cowsheds in a farm in Rusovce village (SW Slovakia) were analysed. The nests were collected after the nestlings had left them, in August and September 1993. Altogether seven mite species occurred (Ornithonyssus sylviarum, Dermanyssus hirundinis, Paragarmania dentritica, Blattisocius tarsalis, B. keegani, Anthoseius sp. and Dinychus perforatus) in these nests. O. sylviarum dominated in 15 nests, while D. hirundinis dominated only in one nest. O. sylviarum, in some of the nests, was represented by several thousands of individuals (e.g. 22,467; 16,062; 10,962). In a great majority of the nests, the adults number prevailed over the subadults number, the ratio ranging approximately from 90:10 to 98:2. In four mass-infested nests the ratio was more balanced, namely 70:30 to 40:60.
