1993

Soybean is an important economic crop of Thailand. But the production of soybean in Thailand is not sufficient to meet the domestic demand. More information on reducing loss of soybean product as a mean to increase soybean production is needed. The main objectives of this study are to assess the post-harvest loss for soybean at farm level of soybean farmers and to find causes of post-harvest loss for soybean. This study based on primary data which were obtained by interviewing 97 soybean farmers from selected villages in Khon Kaen and Loie Provinces. In addition, some data was obtained from on-farm experiment done by soybean farmers concerning with various activities required for soybean production and processing. The percentage of loss based on experimental method at farm level in the north-eastern region are 2.43 for harvesting, 1.38 for stacking before threshing, 0.68 for threshing, respectively. The total of loss in all activities is 4.49 percent of net yield. The percentages of loss based interview method are 1.33 for harvesting, 1.32 for threshing, 1.01 for plant drying, 0.89 for binding, 0.27 for handling to farm storage, 0.22 for stack handling, 0.02 for stacking before threshing, 0.11 for farm storage, 0.072 for grading and 0.001 for cleaning. The total of loss in all activities is 5.42 percent of net yield.
