Diagnostic laboratories are an essential component in any integrated information system designed to monitor animal health and disease. They are in a unique position to provide valuable diagnostic data on disease in livestock populations at both the regional and national level. Animal Disease information originating from diagnostic laboratories should be stored in a database format which allows for efficient reporting of diagnostic test results and a prompt final diagnosis on individual cases. Data from diagnostic laboratories should also be readily accessible for analysis and the preparation of laboratory management reports, disease mapping information, and epidemiological investigations. The DIAG laboratory management system is computerized on screen format system designed to record information on laboratory submission. It has been developed from the PANACEA database software package (PAN-Livestock Services, U.K.) and can be operated on a basic IBM compatible personal computer. It is designed to facilitate the preparation of diagnostic reports and the development of a database which contains easily retrievable information on cases presented to the lab and field investigations undertaken by the disease investigation centre.
