Study on water quality and heavy metals residue in the Tha-Cheen River

Study on water quality and heavy metals residue in the Tha-Cheen River, the result found that the pH values varied from 7.22 to 7.50; dissolved oxygen from 1.20 to 6.60 mg/l: water temperature from 28.50 to 32.30 deg C; carbondioxide 8.20 to 23.63 mg/l; hardness 83 to 129.50 mg/l; alkalinity 90 to 214.75 mg/l ammonia nitrogen from 0.01 to 0.85 mg/l, nitrate-nitrogen from 0.11 to 1.57 mg/l, phosphate-phosphorus from 0.05 to 0.17 mg/l and BOD from 1.00 to 3.87 mg/l. The heavy metals found were Pb 0.01-0.20; Cd 0.01-0.13; Cu 0.02-0.29 and Zn 0.20-0.61 mg/l. However, the deterioration of the water quality was attributable to the livestock farm and domestic discharges directy into the river. There are some 20 major settlements and a large number of industrial estates (dyeing plant, cold storages and vegetable and fruit processing plants) along both river banks in its lower-part of the river. The industrial, agricultural and domestic discharges have apparently rendered to the progressively deteriorating water qualities in the Tha-Cheen River, particularly its lower part. This clearly requires a set of strict measures against discharge of any untreated affluents into the river.
