Partialy replacing fish meal with corn gluten meal improve growth, skin and flesh coloration of hybrid Clarias catfish (Clarias macrocephalus x Clarias gariepinus)

Four isonitrogenous (35 % protein) and isocaloric (310 kcal digestible energy per 100 g) diets of which fish meal was relaced by corn gluten meal at inclusion levels of 0, 3.33, 6.66 and 10.00 % (diets 1-4, respectively) were used to determine dietary effects on growth, skin and flesh coloration of hybrid Clarias catfish. The diets were fed to apparent satiation twice daily for eight weeks to 1.56 g/f of fish held in twelve 120-L glass aquaria at stocking rate of 15 fish per aquarium. The study showed that fish fed diets 2, 3 and 4 had better (P0.05) weight gain than those fed diet 1. Daily feed intake, feed conversion ratio, protein efficiency ratio, apparent net protein retention, survival rate and body composition of fish were not significantly different (P0.05) among all dietary treatments. Fish fed diets 3 and 4 exhibited light-yellowish skin and flesh color similar to that of Clarias macrocephalus. Corn gluten meal diets had no effect on coloration of fish internal organs. The study suggested that corn gluten meal replacing fish meal in hybrid Clarias catfish diet at inclusion levels of 3.33-10.00 % improved growth of fish. To achieve desirable yellowish color of skin and flesh, 6.66-10.00 % corn gluten meal in the diet is optimum.
