Effect of isocaloric diets of five protein levels on growth and fat deposition of striped catfish (Pangasius sutchi)

Striped catfish (Pangasius sutchi), averaging 7 g each, were held in 15, 80-L glass-aquaria at the rate of 30 fish per aquarium. Groups of 3 aquarium were offered either one of 5 compound feeds at 4 % of body weight per day for 8 weeks. The feeds were isocaloric (280 Kcal/100 g), contained 16 %, 20 %, 24 %, 28 % and 29 % crude protein, designated feed 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 respectively. Weight gain and instantaneous growth of fish offered feed 1 and 2 were significantly higher than those of fish offered feed 5 (P0.01). Growth responses in fish offered feed 3 and 4 were not significantly different from those of fish offered the other three feeds (P0.01). The calculated daily protein requirements for the fish grown on the best two feeds were between 11.1 and 11.4 g protein per kg of fish. Feed conversion ratios ranged from 2.4 for feed 1 to 5.6 for feed 5. There were no significant differences in feed conversion ratios among feed 1, 2, 3 and 4 (P0.01), however the feed conversion ratio of feed 5 was significantly higher than those of feed 1 and 2 (P0.01). There were no significant differences in protein efficiency ratios and in apparent net protein retention among all feeds (P0.01). Carcass fat content at the end of the experiment was between 8 % to 10 % in all groups of fish (P0.01).
