Effect of temperature and soil moisture on atrazine degradation

Laboratory experiments were conducted to study the degradation of atrazine in Kamphaengsaen and Pak Chong soil series. Some physical as well as chemical characteristics were analysed. The degradation rate of atrazine at different temperature and moisture content was investigated under laboratory condition. Atrazine solution was amended with soil sample and incubated in controlled temperature 15, 25, 37, 45 deg C at 50 % MWHC. In order to study the effect of moisture, the moisture content of the treated soil were maintained at 10, 30, 50, 100 and 150 % MWHC and kept at room temperature. Soil samples were taken periodically between 0-90 days and quantitative analysis of atrazine residues was detected by Gas Chromatography equipped with FTD. Atrazine degradation was positively correlated with high temperature. The relative degradation of atrazine in 90 days at 15, 25, 37 and 45 deg C of Pak Chong soil was 76, 93, 95 and 99.9 % whereas Kamphaengsaen soil was 31, 43, 60 and 73 % of initial amount, respectively. Moisture content had higher effect on atrazine degradation in Pak Chong soil than Kamphaengsaen soil.
