During the period of 1991-1995, the Institute for Viticulture, Fruitgrowing and Horticulture, Novi Sad (Vojvodina Province, Yugoslavia), have collected over 2,000 genotypes - local, introduced and newly created varieties, for pomological research. Seedling evaluation for cultivar and breeding potential has been continued at all selection stages. Data collecting and retrieval system is established for over 10,000 genes concerning all fruit species. The most valuable are Co (columnar type) of tree habit, resistance to mildew and scab. Unique genotypes suitable as seedling rootstocks are selected within vineyard peach population and Turkish filbert. Application of tissue culture and gene transfer methods have been successful. A clear difference in fluorescence between negative controls and the 63 regenerants obtained after cotyledon inoculation with A. tumefaciens carrying the GUS gene was detected in three plants.
