Monitoring the pre-parturition period to determine the optimal time for caesarean section in double muscled cattle

Parturition in double muscled cattle is slowed down by conformation of the calf relative to the birth canal of the mother. Signs of parturition are not so evident as in ordinary cattle. In addition, parturition can often only be completed by caesarean section. To diminish prenatal mortality, it is advisable to carry out caesarean section at the beginning of the parturition period. This is a quite long period during which the moment of caesarean section can be determined so as to be optimally comfortable for cow, calf, owner and veterinarian. The combination of the changes in body temperature close to parturition and the status of relaxation of the ligamenta sacrotuberalia lata make it possible to predict the onset of parturition and thus to carry out the operation under optimal conditions.
