Possibilities of azadirachtin and salts of dioctylsulfo-succinate for the control of Psylla pyri, Tetranychus urticae and Tarsonemus pallidus

In a search for new molecules with insecticidal and acaricidal properties that might be implemented in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and Insecticide Resistance Management (IRM) strategies, the possibilities of the neem tree extract azadirachtin and of a potassium and a sodium salt of dioctylsulfosuccinate for the control of some major pests of pear and strawberry production were tested. Field trials were carried out on the pear sucker, Psylla pyri (L.) and the strawberry mite, Tarsonemus pallidus (Zimmermann). Glasshouse trials were executed on Tetranychus urticae (Koch). Azadirachtin and potassium dioctylsulfosuccinate were very effective for the control of P. pyri. Especially the action on older larval stages was superior to the known standard compound amitraz. A double application of a tank mix of amitraz and sodium dioctylsulfosuccinate controlled a population of T. pallidus at an acceptable degree, whereas the action of amitraz on its own was insufficient. The tests on T. urticae, which were executed on a strain that was less susceptible to Mitochondrial Electron Transport Inhibitors, indicated that azadirachtin and potassium dioctylsulfosuccinate have potent acaricidal activities. When these compounds were combined in a tank mix or with existing acaricides, a very good control of T. urticae was realised. These results might be of extreme importance to control this important pest at locations at which a population with a lower susceptibility to the existing acaricides has developed
