Phaeosphaera nodorum is a fungal pathogen of wheat. Histological studies have shown that the fungus can penetrate directly into the host leaves. This paper reports on the production of cell-wall degradation enzymes in cultures on fluid media with different carbon sources: wheat seedlings cell walls or galactose. The secreted enzymatic activities are xylanases, polygalacturonases, beta-galactosidases, beta-glucosidases and beta-1.3-glucanses. Optimal conditions of pH and temperature have been previously determined. In cultures filtrates grown on cell-walls, polygalacturonase activity appeared in early stages (second day). Xylanase activity was expressed on the sixth day after incubation The activities of beta-1.3-glucanase, beta-galactosidase and beta-glucosidase were detected on the tenth day of incubation. However, on galactose media, P. nodorum produced only beta-galactosidase, beta-glucosidase, and beta-1.3-glucanase activities. These results could be useful for enzymatic characterization of strains originated from crosses obtained in vitro.
