Development of an integrated programme for control of root rot complex affecting navy bean in Ontario, Canada

The programme encompasses: (a) selection and breeding for resistant cultivars; (b) proper seed treatment; (c) reduction of soil compaction; (d) improvement of drainage; (e) deep ploughing or subsoiling; (f) modification of soil pH as necessary, (g) late planting to avoid cool, wet weather; (h) appropriate choice of herbicide; and (i) adoption of interseason green manure crops. Several environmental, structural, and cyclic factors, such as temperature, rainfall, and pathogen population dynamics, were considered. Temperature should be addressed by delaying planting as late as possible. Excess soil moisture from rainfall or snowmelt should be quickly removed by operating surface furrows and/or subsoil tilling. The best way to manipulate pathogen population is through the establishment of a scheduled crop rotation to take advantage of the cyclic nature of the population dynamics so that beans are introduced to the field at the phase of low pathogen population.
