Biological control of fire blight on fruit trees

Fire blight caused by Erwinia amylovora is a devastating bacterial disease of fruit trees. The classical chemical control consists of treatments with antibiotics, to which the causal agent can develop resistance. With a supplementary biological control of the disease, the risk of resistance development could be minimised. The use of living antagonistic bacteria is one possible way of biological control of fire blight. Bacterial strains of Erwinia herbicola and Pseudomonas fluorescens are two examples of this approach. Another possibility consists in the application of antibacterial substances which exhibit a high specificity towards E. amylovora. An example of this approach are bacteriocines which are currently investigated in Belgium. The different possible ways of biological control of fire blight are discussed in this review article.
