Experimental and simulated root water extraction patterns of tomato cultivated in an Ultisoil were compared. Experimental patterns were determined by calculating the water balance for each soil layer throughout the root zone, using matric potencial and soil water content data measured along the soil profile. Extraction pattems simulations were carried out employing the WAVE (Water and Agrochemicals in the Vadose Environment) model. The simulation model, in most cases, underestimated the water extraction values obtained under field conditions. The simulated water extraction pattern showed closer relation to the root system distribution than the field pattern
