Leaching of Pb, Cd and Hg
1997
Kaerblane, H. | Kevvai, L. | Kanger, J.
The Pb, Cd and Hg content of water soaked through the soil depends on the soil characteristics (first of all on the soil texture and reaction), vegetation and fertilization. Filtrate richer in heavy metals was obtained from lighter soils of acid reaction. But in no cases the content of Pb, Cd and Hg in the filtered water exceeded that of their maximum permitted in drinking water. The annual amount of water equal 12-17 mm of precipitation was filtrated into the lysimeters put into the field in the depth of 60 cm and 0.92-2.10 g Pb, 0.03-0.16 g Cd and 0.004-0.004 g Hg per hectare were leached. In the vegetation-lysimeter trial, where the amount of water equal to about 300 mm of precipitation soaked through the soil layer of 60 cm, the following annual quantities of heavy metals per hectare were leached: 6-15 g Pb; 0.6-0.9 g Cd and 0.02-0.06 g Hg
