Possibilities for minimizing the use of anthelmintics in pig helminthoses treatments

Our long-lasting investigations into Estonian small and large-scale pig farms have shown that the main helminthoses are Ascaris suum and Oesophagostomum spp. infections. Strongyloides suis was detected only in the cases of bad breeding conditions and Trichocephalus suis only in separate population groups. On large-scale pig farms the following keeping principles should be adhered to: application of isolated farrowing, separation of different age groups into sections, to complete the sections according to the principle "all out and all in" and to disinfect the sections. In applying these management mesures the pig herds may remain free of helminths for a long time without anthelmintic treatments. Prophylactic dehelminthizations are needed only in pregnant sow and only in cases where invasion occurs. Recommendations for the control of pig helminthoses are given in this work for three different keeping conditions
